This being the first newsletter I wanted to write on one of the most important spiritual lessons that a disciple needs to know to make their lives count for God. As I thought, my mind went trough many of the important lessons: how to overcome sin, to walk as a spirit-filled man, and spiritual warfare. Then I thought of one of the greatest prophets of the Old Testament: Elisha. Elisha healed the sick, cleansed a leper, made a small amount of food feed many, controlled the waters, made an ax head float, heavenly armies came to his rescue, and raised the dead; many of which only Christ repeated. Like all men born from Adam, Elisha died and was buried in a tomb, then we learn the secret of how to make one’s life count for God when we read:
Once while some Israelites were burying a man, suddenly they saw a band of raiders; so they threw the man's body into Elisha's tomb. When the body touched Elisha's bones, the man came to life and stood up on his feet. (2Ki.13:21)
Elisha was gone, his soul and spirit returned to God, his flesh return to dust, and his bones were all that was left. When the dead man touched Elisha’s bones he came to life, teaching us that it wasn’t the person, Elisha; it was God. If we as disciples desire to be used by God to achieve greatness as He defines it, we must learn to walk in the attitude, that we are nothing but dust which God forms and uses to His glory. God honors humility:
But He gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." (Ja.4:6 note Lk.14:11; Pr.15:33; 18:12; 22:4; 29:23)
It is because of God’s grace that we can realize our full potential and only through humility can we experience the beatitudes Mt.5. God hates pride Pr.6:16 , but He honors the humble because the humble honor Him:
It is because of Him
that you are in Christ Jesus, Who has become for us wisdom from God--that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: "Let him who boasts boast in the Lord." 1Co.1:30-31If we suffer from the sin of the pride of life 1Jn.2:16 we are stealing from God the recognition that is due Him. Therefore let us humbly fulfill God’s purpose for which He created us-- for His glory:
In Him we were also chosen, ... in order that we, who were the first to hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. (Eph.1:11-12; note Isa.43:21; 1Co.10:31)
