Today's society has said, "There is no god." There has been a shift in which the scientific field has governed itself. This becomes very evident when we look at issues such as using aborted babies as material for scientific research. One might become appalled at this practice, but it in itself is not as dangerous as the practice that forms the topic of this month thought: genetic engineering. When God created living things, He created kinds. A single pair of animals which had the genetic diversity to give life to offspring, their own genetic variation within their kind. Scientists used to divide all living things based on similarities, the largest division being a kingdom: plants or animals (with bacteria offering a bit of a challenge, as they say life evolved from DNA to bacteria into either plants or animals). Today they have divided all living things into as few as eight "kingdoms" to over twenty "kingdoms". These then are divided into "phylums" according to major differences; into "classes" by smaller differences; into "orders" by minute differences; into "families"; "genus"; and finally into "species" which divides them by the smallest differences. These divisions are based on the bias of an evolutionary model of the lower evolving into the higher. The Bible however, tells us that God created kinds.
Then God said, "Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds." And it was so. … So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. … God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. (Ge.1:11,21&25)
The Biblical term "kind" could be on a similar level as "order", but would definitely be equivalent to the "family" level of the scientific system. Since the Bible speaks of kinds, they would share a compatible chromosome order necessary to reproduce, proving that all those in the family originated from the first pair that was created. For example: Canadian bison and cattle can be crossed to produce beefalo; members of the cat family can be interbred; sheep can be interbred with goats producing a geep or a shoat. On the other hand, you cannot take semen from a dog and artificially inseminate a cat to produce a dat or cog; as they are different kinds whose chromosome pattern will not match producing an offspring. When speaking on Noah and his ark, many people argue that there was not room to accommodate every species; but the Bible does not say every species was on the ark, only every kind:
You are to bring into the ark two of all living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with you. Two of every kind of bird, of every kind of animal and of every kind of creature that moves along the ground will come to you to be kept alive. You are to take every kind of food that is to be eaten and store it away as food for you and for them." Noah did everything just as God commanded him. (Ge.6:19-22)
If only two of every kind of unclean animal and seven of every kind of clean animal were on the ark, there was more then enough room for their food as well. Proof of the fact that God created kinds and not individual species is found when we study the snake. Snakes used to have legs, but shortly after the creation Satan used the snake to tempt Man. For this reason, God cursed one snake saying:
"Because you have done this, "Cursed are you above all the livestock and all the wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. (Ge.3:14)
God cursed this father of snakes after creation, before offspring could be conceived. Through this all offspring suffered that curse. Every snake that crawls on its belly: big boas; poisonous cobras; harmless garter snakes; yes, every one that crawls on his belly is descended from that one pair of snakes God created. For God created kinds with the genetic diversity to form many different species. Some of these species through isolation formed genetic pools that limited their diversity. Climatic and vegetation differences allowed certain species a higher survival rate. Others with contrasting color, for instance, became easy prey for their predators. This, coupled with isolation caused some species to form social differences that prevented them from breeding back into a greater range of diversity. Nevertheless we must understand the difference between kinds and species to understand the following command:
Keep my decrees. "`Do not mate different kinds of animals. "`Do not plant your field with two kinds of seed. (Le.19:19)
As I already stated, you cannot take a horse and breed it to a cow. The previous command was really impossible at the time when it is written. I believe that command was written for our time, for with genetic engineering we can finally start mixing kinds. If what we read in news-papers is true, geneticists have taken the gene from the spider that produces web and placed in a goat. If this is true, instead of milk, goats will be able to produce the same ultra strong substance as a spider's web. Man thinks he is so smart, and yet with his finite wisdom he really doesn't know what the final outcome would be several generations later or whether it would have an irreversible effect on that kind. God in his omniscience did not create the kinds that geneticists have pieced together; but man thinks he will solve the world's problems, for example: world hunger, by his inventions. This causes me to ponder, what will be the effect on our global food supply by their tampering? Whether their tampering with kinds might have the opposite effect: irreversibly eliminating a large portion of our food chain- causing massive food shortages for man. Or whether tampering with micro-organisms might produce a super bug that will cause a massive plague. We have heard many boasts over the years from the scientific community: the Titanic was unsinkable; Johnstown, PA. would never flood again; and that we know what we are doing with genetic engineering. I do not think God has to punish this generation for the depravity they have allow in society. Just leave man alone, and he will punish himself through his own inventions.
